Historical Details
By the late 1970s, it was apparent that substantial work was needed to repair the outside of St. John's Church, with water intrusion and deteriorating sandstone risking major damage to the structure. At the same time, ideas came forward to "complete" the grand design of Alexander North in ways that would supposedly compliment his work. The west gallery inside the church was successful in both design and function - the concrete block and concrete moulding structure above the dome not so! Nowadays it seems completely out of keeping with the rest of the building's exterior.
