Hearing aid earphone and socket
Identifer
ASJ2023.20Physical Description
Hearing aid consisting of a single earpiece (maker: Emmco) on a wooden handle. This would have received feed via a wired connection from the church sound system at the time. The socket into which it was plugged is made by Clipsal.
Historical Details
Purchased in September 1951 - Steane's Sound System - earphone and control box.
The user would have to use the handle, perhaps resting against shoulder, to hold the small speaker, similar to telephones of the era, against ear. The control box was affixed to a church pew, and had a volume control at the top. The volume knob is missing.
This represents an early and limited attempt at supporting people with a disability in an era before transistors allowed the miniaturisation and battery operation of modern personal hearing aids.
