Sanctuary, chancel and nave pre-2024
Historical Details
The red fleur-de-lis / star-burst carpet - gift which was a feature of St. John's Church for 50 years (1963-2023) can be divided into three eras. Miss Harrap and Girls Friendly Society donated the earliest version, in March 1963. (However, if this was Miss Ada Harrap, who died in 1956, it might suggest the chancel area carpet was installed even earlier than the carpet in the nave, known to be 1963)
Further carpet was purchased at the time of the 1982-84 restoration, largely funded by the "Girls Friendly Society Townsend Group Carpet Fund", and was very similar in appearance.
A third batch was manufactured by Tascot Templeton (Devonport) in 2003 to allow carpeting of the dais built that year. Sadly, a large quantity which was held in storage from that time, and owned by St. John's, was lost when the carpet-laying firm was wound up a few years later.
Some of the carpet was retained when the church was stripped out ahead of the 2023 redevelopment. It was intended to recarpet the rector's vestry with that remnant.
