Physical Description
Memorial honour board listing of those from St. John's Church, Launceston who served in World War I, known as The Great War, 1914 - 1918
Inscription:
There would likely have been an inscription, but it was lost when board went missing in the 1980s.
Historical Details
Like many, or perhaps most, larger churches and organisations, St. John's was heavily impacted by the number of men who went off to armed services during the world wars.
Sadly, after being taken down from the wall during the renovations of 1982-1984, the board was misplaced, and the most likely explanation is that it was discarded among scrap building materials, or damaged beyond repair. In the early 2000s, an Honour Roll book was prepared and displayed in a glass case in the south ambulatory instead of trying to re-create the honour board.
The linked honour roll is reproduced from a listing recorded by the late Jenny Gill. It does not cover later or earlier conflicts.
Materials
Such boards were typically stained cedar with gold lettering.
