Physical Description
Holiday house - Quamby Cottage - gift of Laurence Denham.
This cottage was located on the headland at northern end of Spring Beach, just south of Orford. Until it was sold, a framed memorial document was in the front passage. Inscription:
To all who enter here
This house is a memorial to the generosity
of Laurence Denham
and to the love he showed us his friends
emulating the love of God for him
May some of that generosity permeate your soul
as you rest herein, so tha tyou will be compelled to keep
all that is here in such order that, if Laurence returned,
we should not be ashamed.
Historical Details
Laurence Denham had owned the Spring Beach property for some years before his death, and parishioners and friends were often invited to use it for holidays. After his death in 1971, it was bequeathed to the church for the use of parishioners of St. John's Church, and many families enjoyed summer holidays there, some over 2 or 3 generations. For many, it was a fondly remembered part of their childhood.
It was sold in 2019 along with many other church properties, as part of the Redress Proposal for victims of institutional abuse.
