During holy communion, the veil covers the chalice and paten until the Great Thanksgiving, and the burse is placed on top -  a receptacle for a special cloth, called the corporal, which is used to wipe the chalice. The colours represent the various liturgical seasons. White is used for the great feasts - Christmas and Easter.

(IHS are the first three letters of the name "Jesus" in Greek.)
Historical Details
The burse and veil were given by Mr. J.S.T. McGowan. No details are presently known about the donor.
