Historical Details
There were efforts from the very beginning of St. John's Church in the 1820s to establish Sunday School. The first known references to a Sunday School at St John’s feature in the journal of Chaplain Browne who wrote  on 7 November 1830 that he ‘gave notice for Sunday School being opened this day week’. Our earliest specific records date from the 1840s, but before that time, there were also interdenominational efforts to give children Sunday School teaching. The linked article gives some insight into this period. In one form or other, Sunday School has continued at St. John's until the present day, with some variation of name, such as Stepping Stones from about 2010, and the more prosaic Kids' Church in the 2020s.
Alongside the teaching of children, there have been many associated events and programs - the Anniversaries of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, holiday clubs and even the huge Bethlehem Street production (2008-2010) to which school groups were invited to a replicated streetscape and activities for an insight into life in biblical Judaea.
