While we do not have the specifications for the original building of St. John's Church or the slightly later completion of the tower to accommodate the 2nd clock, there were continuous pressures to alter and expand the building which have continued until the present time.
Faculties
Diocesan faculties were required for any installation or alteration to the church building, such as the installation of a window or plaque as a memorial. Our faculty documents are definitely incomplete, and there is some evidence that the requirement was not always adhered to!

A church building is subject to continuous need for repair, modification, expansion and adaptation.
