** Because St. John's was funded by the colonial government during the convict era, the Articles of Inquiry volume was an official record required by the government to account for expenditure and provide statistics that justified that expenditure. Once the government divested itself of responsibility for the Church of England, the volume was re-purposed for an ongoing record of church management. The final Articles of Inquiry entry was for 1864, and after that, Statistical Returns for the Diocese of Tasmania replaced the ongoing record for the period 1865-1891.
Historical Details
The volumes listed in this entry provide quite a lot of information about the life of St. John's, particularly for the first part of the 19th century, the convict period, for which we have very limited documentary evidence. Only a limited amount of correspondence has survived, and indeed, the amount of correspondence from that era was much smaller in a time when communications were poor and paper and postage were very expensive compared with the 20th century.
The documents include many names such as incumbents, curates, wardens, confirmees, and the costs of church operations in the era.
