Baptism Offerings box
Identifer
ASJ2025.07Physical Description
Likely made of cedar and stained and polished with Baptism Offerings in gilt lettering on front. No provenance at this stage. Possibly associated with the new baptistery which was progressively fitted out after 1911, although, based on the appearance of a couple of fixture offertory boxes that were definitely in the same style as the doors and door hardware of the 1901-1911 “extension” this box, including the lettering, is likely older, and may date to the late 19th century.Historical Details
Whether a set fee was charged for a baptism or not, baptisms were often conducted as separate services, and the box suggests an expectation that a contribution would be made to the church for the services of the minister and any assistant.Materials
