Biography
William Alexander Whitaker (b. 1860 d. 7th June 1933) was a church warden of St. John's Launceston from 1902 to 1912.
He married Louisa Purdy of Port Sorell in 1884. She gave birth to a son, William Robert Whitaker, in 1886, but sadly died in 1887.
Alexander, as he preferred to be called, re-married in 1895 to Edith Flora Emily Phillips.
Not a great deal is know about his life, but at the time of his 2nd marriage, his occupation was recorded as newspaper publisher.
He was treasurer of St. John's Choir in 1905, and in November 1918, appeared before Magistrate Walker in Launceston for publishing a paper entitled "The man who is delaying peace" without including the imprint of the publisher. It was noted that this was a reprint from John Bull magazine, that the quantity printed did not require the imprint, and that it was not printed for gain. At that time, the Daily Telegraph, presumably Whitaker's paper, was "in liquidation". This was likely a pacifist document, and no doubt the issue was sensitive, as the war was still grinding on at time of publication. The case was dismissed.
