Biography
Edith Read (7 Feb 1858 - 20 Dec 1946) was a daughter of Charles and Charlotte Weedon. She was born in Launceston, but little is known of her life. She married Frederick John Read on 24 June 1891 at St. John’s Church, Revd R.C. Nugent Kelly officiating. Frederick Read's occupation was recorded as “warehouseman”. He died just 11 years later in May 1902, and was buried in the Cypress St. cemetery. His monument was relocated to Carr Villa cemetery when Cypress St. burial ground was closed. He and Edith do not appear to have had any children.
Edith spent her later years at “Inglenook”, 20 High St. Launceston, and in her will, left a bequest to a carer who had looked after her and her sister at that address. The will also records a bequest of £100 to St. John’s Church - to be used at the wardens' discretion, and a further gift of £150 to CMS.
There is no known memorial to her at St. John's, and her name only appears as “Mrs Read” on the plaque attached to the bishop's chair in the sanctuary.
