Biography
Dorothy Genders (1892 - 1978) was the daughter of a prominent Launceston business family with strong connections to St. John's Church. Dorothy felt called to Christian ministry, and served for a period at the Mission House, between 1912 and 1917, under the direction of Deaconess Charlotte Shoobridge. We read in her biography which can be found in the linked Australian Dictionary of Biography entry, that she was strongly influenced by her stepmother Mabel, a daughter of Canon Marcus Blake Brownrigg, her grandfather and an aunt in Western Australia. Her time of service at the Mission House preceded theological studies in Sydney at Deaconess House and Moore Theological College, leading to a life of ministry in Western Australia, particularly to deserted women and children, and the destitute. She was honoured for this lifelong work with appointment to M.B.E. in 1970 and died at Subiaco on 27th August 1978.
