Historical Details

By the early 2000s, backup disks were being created for documents, digital photographs and databases, at St. John's, and progressively at the Riverlinks churches - St. Aidan's, St. David's and George Town.

There is considerable overlap between the digitised materials in this box, and printed versions of the same documents, particularly for the earlier years of the digital era. Digital photos are also accessible elsewhere, through our online collection (mainly St. John's materials) and on our servers (several thousand Riverlinks photographs.)

A challenge in the digital era is to ensure the survival of “born digital” documents and materials. Not only are digital materials easily deleted - accidentally or by persons not understanding the need to keep the historical record, but the storage media themselves do not keep indefinitely, hence the need to store materials in more than one location.
