Physical Description
The chalice comprises a cup, stem, and has a concave-shaped base. The chalice is dark red-brown earthernware, thrown and moulded, then dipped in silver-platinum lustre. Damage to the stem and the cup is apparent, and has been repaired.
Historical Details
Revd John Youl was the first incumbent of St. John's Church, taking up his appointment in 1819. It is believed that he brought the chalice with him from England for use in services of Holy Communion. The chalice was handed down to John Youl's son; Sir James Ardell Youl, to John Youl's grandson, Charles Youl, John Youl's great-great-granddaughter, Lina Henrietta Youl (later Lady Lewis), John Youl's great-great-great-grandson, Hubert Lewis, and finally to St. John's Church On 10th October 1960.
