Wooden collection boxes - pair
Identifer
ASJ2026.02Physical Description
A pair of polished wooden collection boxes, likely used in the 19th century.
The base of each box is slightly wider than the rectangular side structure, and at each end, has been formed into a handle. The two handles on each box would make it easier for the box to be passed from person to person along a pew.
They date from an era in which most, if not all, money offerings made during services for the work of the church would have been coins.
Historical Details
The collection boxes were replaced, likely in the early to mid 20th century, by turned wooden collection plates. These, in turn, were replaced by offertory boxes on stands placed on each side of the centre aisle, likely around 2010. With increasing use of direct deposit payments by parishioners, the passing of the plate became less relevant, and likely to prove intrusive for those who had made such direct payments for their offerings.Materials
