Hand-carved walking stick with whimsical carved human face with long beard as handle.
Provenance unknown, but this item has been part of the collection since the 1980s, and it is not out of the question that it may have belonged to one of our long-serving wardens, eg Fred Jones, some of whose possessions have come into the collection.
Historical Details
Walking sticks, along with smoking pipes, pocket watches, hats, and gloves, were seen as a fashionable accessory for businessmen and professionals in the first half of the 20th century, and sticks with carving were popular into the 1940s.Photos of two of the wardens of that era show them with walking sticks.Materials
