Pair of brass candlesticks inscribed “The gift of Bruce and Valery Proverbs - 7th November 1959"Historical Details
Bruce and Valery Proverbs married around the time of the donation of the candlesticks. We know from their later church involvements that they were very much aligned with traditional patterns of worship often seen as “Anglo-Catholic”, and this may have been the motivation for the donation of the candlesticks.
When St. Peter's Church, St. Leonards, was being cleared out ahead of its sale circa 2022, the candlesticks were found in a storage area, where they had apparently been for a considerable time, although they do appear on the communion table in a 1991 photo of the church interior.
The use of candles has been encouraged or discouraged by various clergy, depending on their own high or low churchmanship.
In 2025, with the permission of the Proverbs family, the candlesticks were sold to the Roman Catholic Institute of the Good Shepherd, which meets for Sunday services at the former Anglican Church of the Good Shepherd in Hadspen.
