Biography
Max Easther (8/11/1910 - 5/8/1994) was born at Trevallyn Tas. He attended primary school at Wellington Square State School, Launceston, Elizabeth Street Practice School, Hobart and Invermay Primary School, Launceston. His secondary school education was for two years at Launceston Junior Technical School. Max commenced work at Launceston's "Examiner Newspaper" on 13 April 1926 as office boy and started an apprenticeship as a photo-engraver in 1927. He retired from "The Examiner" as a supervisor on 13 April 1976 - 50 years to the day!
Because his employer was considered to be "an essential service", he did not see any active wartime service. He was, however, a member of the Royal Australian Navy Reserve. He married Marjorie in 1937 and they had two children - Barry and Suzanne.
Max had a strong interest in stamp collecting and associated activities, and for over three decades, took a leading role in the Launceston Philatelic Society, to whom we are indebted for these biographical notes.
Max was very much involved with St John's Anglican Church in Launceston. He was a Vestryman and Warden for 40 years, a member of Synod for 29 years and on the Patronage Council of Archdeaconry for 16 years.
He died suddenly on 5 August 1994, aged 83.
