Biography
Arthur Evans (15th January, 1848 - 24th May, 1921) was born in Launceston, the son of Francis Evans and Elizabeth, formerly Clayton, of Brisbane Street. There were three other boys in the family. Arthur was educated at the Launceston Church Grammar School.
He entered the banking profession at an early age, and after many years became manager of the Bank of Tasmania. His father, Francis, was the foundation manager from 1853 to 1873. This bank became the National Bank of Tasmania in 1885, and Arthur Evans was made chief accountant. He held this appointment until his retirement in 1913. He was interested in the development of the city and its people.
He took an interest in mining ventures, and for ten years was a director of the Mt. Bischoff Tin Mining Co. He was also a Justice of the Peace in Launceston.
He first married Miss Groom of 'Harefield', Fingal, and later, Mrs Amy White-Parsons. There were no children from either marriage. They lived at Trevallyn and were members of St. John's Church and later St. Oswald's.
Arthur Evans died at his residence, 'Glenista', on 24th May, 1921, aged 73.
In St. Oswald's an unusual window was erected in the porch, depicting an Evans coat-of-arms, with the inscription:
