Biography
Lindsay Arthur O'Neill (1924-2002) was organist at St. John's Church, Launceston from 1950 to 1974.
Born in Melbourne to a family involved in church and community choirs, Lindsay was taught to play the organ in East Melbourne before taking lessons at St. Paul's Cathedral under Dr. A.E. Floyd. He had appointments as organist in Methodist and Congregational churches, winning a competition in the Heidelberg Eisteddfod in 1947.
Floyd recommended O'Neill, still in his 20s, for the post at St. John's, where he remained for more than 20 years., broadening his repertoire and supervising the comprehensive rebuild of the organ by J.W. Walker & Sons. He made several trips to the UK to further his credentials.
His performances were widely heard during the 1960s through a weekly ABC radio program, "Organists of Australia".
O'Neill joined the part-time music staff at Scotch College in 1959. From 1966, he was Music master, chapel organist and choirmaster at Launceston Church Grammar School.
He returned to Melbourne in 1975, as organist of St. Andrew's, Brighton, retiring in 1996.
