An short obituary was published in St. John's "Parish Messenger" in February 1960, and outlined his connection with the church:
With the passing of Mr. A. A. Castley, a life-long association with St. John's, was broken. He attended St. John's Sunday School and in the early days he was active in the work of St. John's Mission in Canning Street, assisting in running a Boys' Club and helping with the services. He became a sidesman of St. John's Church in 1914 and when the first vestry was formed in 1935, he was elected secretary. In 1942 he was nominated as Rector's Warden and continued in this office till the middle of 1950 when he resigned. He gave fifteen years' service as Church Secretary. He will long be remembered for his cheerful and friendly personality and his great love of flowers. Our sincere sympathy is with Mrs. Castley and the members of his family.
