Biography
Originating in England in 1876, Mothers Union was begun by Mary Sumner, who wanted mothers to gather to help one another, and realise more fully their responsibilities as wives and mothers.

Mothers Union reached Tasmania via the small settlement of Cullenswood in the Fingal valley in 1892. At St. John's Launceston, meetings were held weekly in the rectory on Thursday afternoons up to the 1940s but in the 1950s, when that generation became older, the younger women met on Tuesday nights in the rectory.

Meetings were social in nature and well attended, with a new generation encouraged to take part as the “Young Wives”. A major focus for the year was to raise money for church funds and other causes. Clarendon Children’s Home was a beneficiary of fundraising over a number of years.
